Alumni President's Report - September, 2009

Greetings fellow Hawks, friends and family. I am very happy to have the opportunity to report to you as the new president of the Hudson Catholic Alumni Association.

One of my biggest goals is to help broaden our base of active alumni. So, I've put out feelers to see what is on people's minds. For the most part, all of the feedback I've heard can be generalized into the question, "WHAT IS GOING ON??" Actual questions and concerns included the following:

  • "How are the donations being spent?"
  • "How are decisions are being made?"
  • "How can we get our ideas heard?"

If you know the answers to these questions, then you are probably an active alumnus.

However, if you can't answer these questions, we need to figure out a few ways for you to become and stay informed. A report such as mine here simply can not cover all the details you all are looking for. Furthermore, some of the answers you may be looking for may not be mine to give.

So, it is my opinion that the goal should be to figure out ways for us all to try to get the information we want. To begin this conversation, I am providing some suggestions for how I think you can stay informed. Please take a few moments to read through them and then let me know what you think.

1. Attend the Alumni Association meetings. Our next meeting is Tuesday, Sept. 8 at 7:30 p.m. at the school. The meetings are open to all Hudson Catholic alumni, and are a great chance to catch up on many of the school's activities. Additionally, they are a great place to discuss current issues that affect the Hudson Catholic community. A lot goes on at these meetings. If you can't attend the meetings, please feel free to reach out to me to find out more about what is going on. Additionally, I hope to work together to develop better ways to communicate information about the meetings and the projects that are discussed at these meetings.

2. Please read our e-newsletter (Accipiter), bookmark the school's web site, and PASS IT ON. The school administration and the volunteers who run the alumni association are very busy with the operational aspects of all our projects, however, we do try to keep the web site current and release this electronic newsletter monthly during the school year. I am currently involved in a project to re-design the school web site into a more informative community portal. Please contact me if you would like to help or know of someone that would be good to approach about that project.

3. Please send us your contact information and update us when it changes. Did you know that one of the big reasons the school is still open is because Brother Pat kept excellent alumni records? Please do your part and encourage your fellow Hawks to do the same. To update your contact info, please e-mail alumni@hudsoncatholic.org to let us know your correct mailing address, phone numbers and e-mail address. Alternatively, updates can be made by calling 201-332-5970 ext. 17.

4. Follow us on FaceBook & Twitter. The school now has accounts on FaceBook and Twitter. If you're so inclined, click the buttons at the bottom of this e-mail to visit our pages. Personally, I don't think these are the best ways to stay informed, but they can help provide an extra layer of awareness. Please keep in mind, these are school accounts, and not specific to the alumni association.

5. Get involved. There are plenty of ways you can help out the school. Any way you can help is always appreciated. Please take a peek at the school calendar and let us know if you would like to help plan or be a helping hand at one of the events.

6. Send in your feedback & suggestions for how we might communicate better. Specifically, I am hoping to build better lines of more informative, effective communication, but, it will take some time and your involvement. If you have specific questions, feedback & suggestions about this topic or any other, please send me an e-mail to cappiels@hudsoncatholic.org or call my cell phone at 201-424-8864. The best time to reach me is 7-9 p.m. on weeknights.

Please keep in mind, this is only the beginning of this conversation, and I am investigating ways for us to communicate better. Stay tuned. I am hoping that together we can further broaden our base of energized, active alumni who are committed toward the advancement of Hudson Catholic and the Hawk community!

Kind regards to you, your friends, and family,
Steven Cappiello
