One Year Gone - Many More to Come!

Having just participated in the graduation ceremony for the Class of 2009, at I want to express my heartfelt thanks for the recognition that our newest graduates gave to the Alumni Association.  By dedicating their yearbook to the alumni, they have given all of us their thanks and respect.  Sitting in St. Aedan Church, watching them receive their diplomas, I could not get this line from Springsteen’s song “Reason to Believe” out of my mind:  “…at the end of every hard earned day people find some reason to believe.”  Our future is secure in their able young hearts and minds; Hudson Catholic Rising is safe in their hands.

I am looking forward to seeing all of my brother Hawks on Monday, June 8, at our 16th Annual Golf Outing.  This event has been the cornerstone of our Association’s social calendar for many years now.  The numbers this year are looking very good but we always have room for more.  Whether to Golf and attend the Lunch or just to attend the Lunch, join us once again for a grand morning and afternoon “down the shore.”  I look forward to another great day in the history of the Association and Hudson Catholic Rising.

SUMMER PLANS:  You Bet! We are planning on holding a summer family BBQ in the Hawks’ courtyard in mid-August.  We will be welcoming our new freshman girl and boy’s families to a gathering of the Black and Gold for a celebration of Hudson Catholic Rising.  More information and date to follow in the July Accipiter.

Adios,

Larry Basinski ‘70
Alumni Association President

Graduation - Class of 2009

On Saturday, May 30, 2009, ninety-seven young men made history. They were the Hudson Catholic graduating class of 2009. They made history because they are the class that almost wasn’t. They made history because they are the last all boys senior class. Their graduation also became a part of the long and illustrious history of Hudson Catholic, as they became the 42nd graduating class.

Guest speaker Monsignor Robert T. Sheeran, President of Seton Hall University, told the graduates: “Understand what you have been given (at Hudson Catholic) and give back.”

He went on to talk about the historic times they saw in their years at Hudson Catholic and encouraged them to write new chapters in their own histories.

“You get what you want if you deserve it,” he told the seniors, explaining that hard work and dedication were necessary for success in college and life.

Monsignor Sheeran also told them to be men of intelligence and character, saying both were needed to live moral and good lives. Not only is it important to find out who you are, he told the students, but also find out whose you are. Quoting Bob Dylan, much to the amusement of this alum, Monsignor Sheeran said, “You gotta serve somebody.”

In closing, Monsignor Sheeran said, “God bless you on this wonderful odyssey you are beginning. Wherever you go on this odyssey, know that Hudson Catholic is there with you, and Hudson Catholic is there for you. Go Hawks!”

In both the Salutatorian and Valedictorian addresses, Binal Patel and Rutul Shah thanked the alumni for the dedication and hard-work that helped save the school and make this graduation (and many more to come) possible. A special presentation of the 2009 Hawk Yearbook, which is dedicated to the alumni, was presented to Larry Basinksi, ’70, Gary Ferrari, ’73, and Joe Carluccio, ’69, who accepted on behalf of all alumni.

We congratulate the graduating class of 2009, and we welcome you all into the Alumni Association. You are now a member. Take advantage of that. Become involved. Stay connected. Remember that Hudson Catholic is always a home for you, and fellow alumni are your Hawk Brothers for life.

Words from
Gary & Warren

When Father Warren Hall, ’81, and I found ourselves with personal plans to travel to South Florida on overlapping dates, we quickly developed the idea to take advantage of our presence locally to identify, contact, and visit with several alumni in the area.

Akram Girgis, '81 & Father Warren Hall

The prevailing notion was that if these alums could not easily come to Hudson Catholic to learn of all the good things happening here in the past 12 months, then we would take Hudson Catholic to them!

Comings and Goings

Hudson Catholic is more than a school. It is a family. That is something we have heard often, and it is something we saw proven true this past year in ways we probably couldn’t have imagined before April 2008.

Thanks to everyone who has been submitting to “Comings and Goings.” We encourage alumni to submit announcements about the goings-on in our Hawk Family members’ lives.

With summer approaching, let’s hope all our Hawks and their families take an opportunity for rest, relaxation, and entertainment. Hudson’s own John Colaneri, ’71, will be performing with his band, the John Christian Group, at Liberty State Park Summerfest on July 7, 2009, at 9 p.m. and at Owen Grundy Park on July 30, at Jazz for Lunch. Come out and enjoy some good music performed by a brother Hawk.

Mark Bulwicz, ’73, recently attended the 20th anniversary dinner celebration of the Alliance Francaise Club of Doylestown, Pennsylvania, where he lives with his Dublin-born French speaking wife and first year member of the club, Geraldine Flanagan. Doylestown boasts a chapter of this national club celebrating French language and culture. Mark always looks forward to these special French club events. Not because he speaks French (Spanish I and II were his specialty under the tutelage of Brother Antonio in 1971/72), or even for the food, but most importantly because it often leads to an opportunity to bump into his at Hudson Catholic art teacher, Rosemary Carroll, a club member. As he reminded Rosemary, his fondest memory of her class was Day 1, when she made the announcement that no one would fail the course as long as they gave it their best shot. Mark's best shot was achieving a straight line. But Rosemary was amazed that Mark brought up one art subject--Graphical Perspective. He told her the one item he remembers taking away from the course was the idea of perspective in a painting, and he still looks at Perspective in paintings whenever in a museum. She laughed out loud, telling Mark that Perspective is the one thing she used as a benchmark in evaluating her students: “If you got that right, you were at least giving it 'your best shot' and earned a B.” Separately, Gerrie then received a special 'thank you' award for the commemorative Cloisonné Pins she commissioned. The award was described in French to the entire club membership, and afterwards, standing by Gerrie's side, Mark was asked to comment. "Je ne parle pas Francais" was all he could say.

Congratulations to Carl Gargiulo, '73, whose firm, Strulowitz & Gargiulo, was awarded an Area Development Council Gateway County Award by the Hudson County Chamber of Commerce. Read More
