Comings and Goings Hudson Catholic is more than a school. It is a family. That is something we have heard often, and it is something we saw proven true this past year in ways we probably couldn’t have imagined before April 2008. Thanks to everyone who has been submitting to “Comings and Goings.” We encourage alumni to submit announcements about the goings-on in our Hawk Family members’ lives. With summer approaching, let’s hope all our Hawks and their families take an opportunity for rest, relaxation, and entertainment. Hudson’s own John Colaneri, ’71, will be performing with his band, the John Christian Group, at Liberty State Park Summerfest on July 7, 2009, at 9 p.m. and at Owen Grundy Park on July 30, at Jazz for Lunch. Come out and enjoy some good music performed by a brother Hawk. Mark Bulwicz, ’73, recently attended the 20th anniversary dinner celebration of the Alliance Francaise Club of Doylestown, Pennsylvania, where he lives with his Dublin-born French speaking wife and first year member of the club, Geraldine Flanagan. Doylestown boasts a chapter of this national club celebrating French language and culture. Mark always looks forward to these special French club events. Not because he speaks French (Spanish I and II were his specialty under the tutelage of Brother Antonio in 1971/72), or even for the food, but most importantly because it often leads to an opportunity to bump into his at Hudson Catholic art teacher, Rosemary Carroll, a club member. As he reminded Rosemary, his fondest memory of her class was Day 1, when she made the announcement that no one would fail the course as long as they gave it their best shot. Mark's best shot was achieving a straight line. But Rosemary was amazed that Mark brought up one art subject--Graphical Perspective. He told her the one item he remembers taking away from the course was the idea of perspective in a painting, and he still looks at Perspective in paintings whenever in a museum. She laughed out loud, telling Mark that Perspective is the one thing she used as a benchmark in evaluating her students: “If you got that right, you were at least giving it 'your best shot' and earned a B.” Separately, Gerrie then received a special 'thank you' award for the commemorative Cloisonné Pins she commissioned. The award was described in French to the entire club membership, and afterwards, standing by Gerrie's side, Mark was asked to comment. "Je ne parle pas Francais" was all he could say. Congratulations to Carl Gargiulo, '73, whose firm, Strulowitz & Gargiulo, was awarded an Area Development Council Gateway County Award by the Hudson County Chamber of Commerce. German Lara, ’77, has recently been promoted to Environmental, Safety, and Security Director for Flowers Foods in Thomasville, Georgia. And even better than that, he recently was blessed with the birth of his third grandchild, Lucian Cruz. In a recent e-mail, German said, “It’s good to see all the familiar faces in the newsletter. Seeing Jimmy Spanarkel brings a great amount of beautiful memories. Making a run for State, I know that it boosted us on the Soccer field and made us accomplish our goals.” Congratulations on your promotion and the birth of your grandson. Maybe we can create the Thomasville to Hudson Catholic school bus route when it’s time for Lucian to attend high school. John Weller, ’77, brother of Mark, ’79, is now residing at Hudson Manor Health Care Center, a long-term care facility, in Secaucus. He will be celebrating his 50th birthday on August 27, 2009. If anyone would like to send birthday wishes or simply drop a note and say hello, you can mail them to: Hudson Manor Health Care Center Jack Curry, ’82, addressed the seniors at the De La Salle Awards Banquet on May 12, 2009. In speaking to the seniors, Jack said, “Hudson Catholic helped shape the person I became.” Thank you, Jack, for sharing your story with the seniors—and for being who you are. As summer swiftly approaches, we look forward to reading your columns about America’s favorite pastime. Danny Niekrasz, ’07, coordinated a very successful Alumni Basketball game on Saturday, May 23, 2009. Over twenty graduates (mostly from the last five years) returned to the Hawks’ Nest for a fun—and competitive—basketball game. At lunch, many alums commented on the great day they were having back at the Nest and were looking forward to many more events like this one. Great work, Danny. Ready to run the next one? Being a family, we want to remember those family members who have gone on before us. We encourage anyone who would like to write a remembrance about a fellow Hawk or faculty member to submit it to bslattery@hudsoncatholic.org. We want to remember and celebrate the lives of those who journeyed with us during our time at Hudson Catholic. This month we remember William Murray-O’Grady, ’94, who passed away on May 28, 2009. We ask you to keep his parents Diane K. Murray and Professor Harold V. O’Grady in your thoughts and prayers. Anyone wishing to remember William is asked to make a donation in his memory to God’s Love We Deliver, http://www.glwd.org. We offer our condolences to Giovanni and Ernesto Grassi, ’05 and ’11, on the passing of their mother Erminia Grassi, who passed away on May 30, 2009. Please keep them and the entire Grassi family in your thoughts and prayers. |
