______
Drama Society
Recently, I had the chance to sit down with Robert Astudillo, ’06, to discuss the Hudson Catholic Drama Society. While students read over their lines nearby, Robert told me about the history of the current Drama Society, where they are now, and his hopes for the future.
Brian Slattery: What sparked your interest in theater?
Robert Astudillo: Directing. I am a Media Arts major at N.J.C.U. and am studying to become a movie director and screenwriter. I love film; so I like to do whatever I can that involves media and theater. I felt that by returning to H.C. and getting involved with Drama, I would get more directing experience and give back to the school that opened up a lot of opportunities for me. It has been a blessing to get to work here and get the experience I need to become a successful director. (It beats having to get coffee for some random person at an Internship.) Read More

Larry's Lifeboat Letter
“It’s mad, it’s gay, the lusty month of May.” This line from Camelot, one of the most beloved Broadway musicals, say’s it all.
At the recent Hall of Fame Luncheon, I had the pleasure of introducing Gary Ferrari, ’73, as he received this well-deserved honor. Gary has long been one of the best lifeboats the good ship Hudson Catholic has ever had. So I thought it would be good fun to perhaps have a Captain Smith (captain of R.M.S. Titanic fame) look when doing the intro.

In my introduction of Gary, I spoke of how, at a time when we needed help, we had 6,000 lifeboats to keep all the souls at our alma mater safe. You, my brother Hawks, are the school’s lifeboats. You have served her well and will, as we go forward, always stand by ready and able to bring all who walk her decks and learn in her classrooms safely home. I salute Gary for his work and you all for yours.
Adios,
Larry Basinski ‘70

Hall of Fame
On a sunny Sunday afternoon in April, with the New York City skyline as the backdrop, five members of the Hudson Catholic community were inducted into the Hall of Fame. These five inductees join the esteemed company of people like Brother Pat King, Thomas F.X. Bender, and the late Coach Joe "Rocky" Pope.

The 2009 induction class included Brother Raymond Murphy, Brian Neary, ’69, Gary Ferrari, ’73, William Keegan, ’73, and James Spanarkel, ’75.
“This year’s class is a diverse group. We have a lawyer, a Basketball star, a police officer, a finance expert, and an educator. These inductees exemplify the diversity and talent you find at Hudson Catholic,” said Larry Basinski, Alumni Association president.
Brother Ray was born in Philadelphia, where he attended West Catholic and La Salle University, both Christian Brothers' schools. Brian Neary attended Notre Dame and NYU School of Law. In 1982, he opened his own law firm and continues to be recognized as a leading defense attorney in the state of New Jersey. Gary Ferrari recently completed a 27-year career at the executive level for American Express and is now embarking on a new career in business advisory services. He is also Volunteer Chairman of the Development Committee of the Consultative Board. William Keegan retired as a Lieutenant in the Special Operations Division of the Port Authority Police Department. In 2001, he was the Night Operations Commander of the WTC Rescue/Recovery Teams. He founded "H.E.A.R.T. 9/11," a volunteer team of search and rescue professionals, and wrote a book about his experiences on and after 9/11 entitled “Closure – The Untold Story of Ground Zero.” Jim Spanarkel played basketball at Duke and then was drafted to the N.B.A., where he played for the 76’ers and Dallas. Besides his involvement with the alumni association, Jim works in investments and as a T.V. analyst for C.B.S. Sports.
Mayor Jerramiah Healy was on hand to present each inductee with a proclamation from the city on the occasion of their induction into the Hall of Fame, and over 100 alumni, family, faculty, and friends shared in the inductees’ special day.
“We are proud to honor these men this year. They embody the spirit and mission of Hudson Catholic,” said Steven Cappiello, Consultative Board Marketing Committee Chair. |

Words from Warren
One of the most awesome examples of strength and beauty found in nature is the great Redwood tree of the forests of northern California. One would suspect that what keep these huge and mighty trees in place would be roots that go hundreds of feet into the ground.
This, however, is not true. The fact is, the roots of the Redwoods are not very deep at all. However, the roots of each individual tree intertwine with the roots of the tree next to it, and the tree next to that, and the tree next to that. When a strong wind blows, or when the earth quakes, these trees literally hold each other up. When one is weak, it depends on its fellow trees to be strong, so that all remain standing tall and solid together.
Following the resurrection of Jesus, the disciples continued to preach the Gospel. They were routinely rejected, refuted, put in jail, and even threatened with death. How could they have withstood such pressures? The answer is: they relied on the strength of each other.
When you read the Acts of the Apostles, you realize that no member of that early church was alone. They traveled as a community, they preached as a community, they were jailed as a community, they came to each other’s aid as a community, and they continually gave praise to God as a community. The key to their strength and endurance was their being intertwined with one another and with God.
We witnessed how intertwined the roots of this Hudson Catholic family are just a year ago. The winds blew against our beloved school, the earth shook it almost to its foundation, but it remained standing tall and mighty. Why? Because everyone who calls this school home gave the support to keep all of us standing.
For that, we are forever grateful and blessed.

Comings and Goings
Hudson Catholic is more than a school. It is a family. This is something we have heard often, and it is something we saw proven true this past year in ways we probably couldn’t have imagined before April 2008.
Thanks to everyone who has been submitting to “Comings and Goings.” We encourage alumni to submit announcements about the goings-on in our Hawk Family members’ lives.
This month we shine the spotlight on some fine Hawk men (and a fine Hawk's child).
Christian McCarthy, son of Jill and Rod McCarthy,’68, won the 2009 Regional Spelling Bee in Florida (beating the 29 top spellers from across the state) and will compete in the National Bee in Washington, D.C. this year. The winning word was “frigorific.” Bonus points to any alumnus who is able to give us the definition or use the word in a sentence. (No cheating, guys!) We join Christian’s proud parents in congratulating him on this amazing accomplishment. We look forward to seeing him at the National Bee.
Recently, Father Warren Hall, ’81, had the opportunity to have lunch with Dr. Louis Stabile, ’84, while traveling to California for an educational conference. Read More
