Accipiter

ONCE AND AGAIN... ACCIPITER

We are excited to announce the new name of our e-newsletter.

Welcome to Accipiter.

There is actually a small story behind this name, which many of our older alums may know. For those who graduated within the last twenty years, let me tell you the tale of how Accipiter came to be.

Soon after the Alumni Association started up in 1982, we began publishing a quarterly newsletter to reach out and begin reestablishing the relationship between the school and its graduates. At some point in 1983, Brother Patrick King (who else, right?) proposed a name for the Alumni Quarterly, and it was renamed Accipiter.

For those of you in the early years of H.C.H.S., who had the good fortune to be schooled in Latin by Brother Albert Lautenslager, you will probably remember that Accipiter is Latin for Hawk.

In tribute to Brother Al, who left us in 1977, we proudly rename our online alumni newsletter Accipiter.

We hope you, also, appreciate the tribute to scholarship and affinity to alma mater.

We hope you enjoy the updates our volunteer alumni work hard to bring you on a regular basis. This is your newsletter; so please feel free to offer suggestions for features or submit content yourself.

Just Trying to
Keep Up!

Does anyone remember the sign in Don Ruby’s classroom that read:  “TIME IS PASSING, ARE YOU?”  Does anyone remember Don Ruby?  Does anyone really know what time it is?  Does anyone really care?  I, FOR ONE, DO.  I care every day and every minute that the goals we have set for ourselves will be met.  I care because men like Br. Pat King, Br. Henry Dermer, Br. Luke Maher, Br. Ron Rhodes, Br.Martin Zewe, Br. Richard Kestler, and, yes, good old Br. Al cared enough to get me through four of the best years of my life.

It is great to visit the past, but living in the present is the greatest gift of all.  I am around Hudson almost every day that I am not working.  The past lingers only so long because the present is so demanding.  In the present, we are building the future of a great school.  In the present, we are teaching the young men that there is no retreat, no surrender.  In the present, there is knowledge, there is fun, there is life, there is hope, and there is where you will find HUDSON CATHOLIC.

Make it a point to come to visit and walk the halls. Meet the boys who will lead us tomorrow.  Visit the school that will give us tomorrow’s working men and women.  If you would like to meet me for a few hours and take a walk down memory lane, drop me a line at alumni@hudsoncatholic.org.
The present is a great place to start and to finish.  I am so proud of what we have done and what we are going to do.

Time is passing, and so are we.

Adios,

Larry Basinski ‘70
Alumni Association President

A Great Day to be Irish,
A Great Day to be a Hawk!

On Saturday, February 7, 2009, hundreds gathered in Hudson Catholic’s Rocky Pope Gymnasium to honor Brother Patrick King on the occasion of being named Grand Marshal of this year's Jersey City St. Patrick’s Day Parade.

Escorted by an honor guard of bagpipers, Brother Pat entered the party with Father Warren Hall, ’81, president/principal of Hudson Catholic and Brother Ray Murphy, who gave the invocation to begin the evening. Then, the party began. Step dancers graced the audience with their quick and sure-footed work, and Bobby Byrne entertained an appreciative crowd, many of whom sang along to the classic Irish and American songs that were performed during his concert... In The Halls and On The Field

Brother Patrick King, graciously carrying out his duties as Grand Marshal of this year’s Jersey City St. Patrick’s Day Parade, marched in the Belmar St. Patrick’s Day Parade on March 1, along with fellow Hawks and friends. Jersey City’s parade is Sunday, March 15, 2009, at 12:30 p.m. Come out and wish Brother Pat well.

Recently, a familiar face was spotted again in the halls of Hudson Catholic. Current students didn’t know who was in their midst, but anyone who graduated before 1997 would have immediately recognized Jim O’Donnell, ’69, as he paid his alma mater a visit and toured the very classes in which he once taught. We hope he is able to visit again soon. It would be great to have him address our current students. I’m sure, like many of us, they would be educated and entertained.

In Track and Field this year, Labron Collins, Kadeem Johnson, Rory Walsh, and Chase Whetstone competed in the Meet of Champions. This is the largest group to visit the Meet of Champions in Hudson's history.

Rory Walsh won the Non-public B Indoor Shot Put State Title.

It’s good to know that the only time Hawks are on the run is when they are competing in Track and making us proud.

Congratulations, guys!

Class Captains Update

We are happy to report that sixteen Hawks volunteered to be Class Captains. Their service will help continue the tradition of Hudson Catholic.

We do, however, need more volunteers for the upcoming fundraising initiative planned for the 2009 fiscal year. The school is on a very solid course, and the future looks bright, but it can only continue on this course with the help of volunteers like you.

Please consider becoming part of the team by volunteering to be a Class Captain. We need Hawks from the following years to take the lead as Class Captains: '72, '73, '74, '75, '76, '77, '78, '79, '81, '82, '83, '86, '87, '89, '90, '91, '92, '93, '94, '96, '98, '99, '01, '05, '06.

If able to serve, contact us at hudsoncatholicalumni@hotmail.com Subject: CLASS CAPTAIN.

Words from Warren

Dear Hawk Alumni and Friends,

It was about 9:30 p.m. on February 7, as I was standing in the “Pope Gymnasium,” when I started to think about what a difference a year has made. Just about a year ago, a group of people were gathered in this same gymnasium with heavy hearts. On this night, many of those same people were gathered again, this time with joy-filled spirits. From weeping and crying to singing and dancing in one short year! Who brought this to my attention was one of the twenty-five students who volunteered to be greeters and food servers that night.

“This is a whole lot different from last year,” he said to me.

I just smiled at him and said, “It sure is.”

That student didn’t realize the depth of his observation. A lot, indeed, has changed over the past year. There is a renewed spirit among the students in the building. There is a renewed commitment to the Mission that Hudson Catholic must carry out. There is a renewed sense of appreciation for our school by the neighborhood, the city, the county, and the Archdiocese. I could go on and on, but the dinner/dance honoring Br. Pat reflected something else that is renewed: the pride the alumni have in their alma mater!

When I was the equipment manager for the football team, Coach Ed Agresta had the team wear shirts that read “Hawk Pride.” That Pride is back, and it is back with a vengeance!

Now we have to keep up the energy and the passion. We have plenty of events planned to bring us together. Those events are listed each month in this newsletter. I also invite you to stop by the school any time. Let me show you around if it has been a while since you were here. I promise you will feel the energy and see how your gifts to the school are being used to continue the mission of “Hudson Catholic Rising.”

Rev Warren Hall, ‘81 President/Principal

Comings and Goings

Hudson Catholic is more than a school. It is a family. That is something we have heard often, and it is something that we saw proven true this past year in ways we probably couldn’t have imagined before April 2008.

Like any other family, we celebrate the good times and the milestones in our family members’ lives. Like any other family, we mourn and remember those members of our family who have gone before us. But we also celebrate their lives.

As we continue developing the e-newsletter, we want to make sure we take the time to celebrate, as well as the time to commemorate our lost Hawks; so we have created “Comings and Goings.”

We would like anyone who would like to write about a fellow Hawk or faculty member who has gone before us to submit your remembrance to bslattery@hudsoncatholic.org. We want to remember and celebrate the lives of those who journeyed with us during our time at Hudson Catholic.

We also encourage our readers to submit marriage, birth, promotion notices, and anything else note-worthy. We will try our best to publish as many of those notices as possible each month.

This month we put the spotlight on Thomas Downes, ’78, who will be inducted into the Hudson County Sports Hall of Fame at Casino in the Park on March 26, 2009. If you are having trouble remembering Tommy, he was the one who was up ahead of the pack whenever you had to run in gym class. His love of track and running only grew after his time at Hudson Catholic, and today he is known to many in the Hudson County area and beyond as a prominent marathon runner.

Our congratulations go out to Tommy on the occasion of this great honor.
