Alumni President Letter - January 2009
I love to smile and see people smiling back.
Fr. Warren is a guy who likes to smile.
The good thing about being the President of the Alumni Association at this time is knowing I can help my brother Hawk, Fr. Warren, make a real difference in the lives of so many of our hard-working Hawk families--working families whose young men are following in our footsteps, working families who have entrusted their sons (and yes, soon their daughters) to our brother Hawk, Fr. Warren Hall, to our Christian Brothers, and to our lay faculty in “Our School.” They all will teach them and give them the same building blocks to achieve success that we were given at the Hawks’ Nest. It makes me smile.
When the Lady Hawks enter the school later this year, even more working families will join us in Hudson Catholic Rising. Many more hands will help us share the burden and carry on the great tradition of a De La Salle education. This brings a smile to my face. This is how we will not just survive but thrive in these times.
Before I became a Brothers’ Boy, my mother gave me a lesson that was one of the foundations of what was later confirmed by the De La Salle Christian Brothers at Hudson Catholic. When I first learned to spell the word “American,” my mother pointed out to me that the last four letters of the word create the phrase “I CAN.” She called this the birthright of every American citizen and told me that these were words that I should never forget. She told me to always believe in myself and that “Yes! I Can!” Since this past April--and throughout the most recent presidential campaign--these words have been ringing in my ears. The echoes remain a sound that rings true of what I was taught by my mom and dad and confirmed throughout my years at Hudson Catholic. These echoes make me smile.
You and I--and our school--will, by God’s grace, succeed, because each of us who calls himself a Brothers’ Boy knows the truth and power behind the words “Yes We Can.”
This is why I smile every time I hear the words “Hudson Catholic Rising.”
Yes we did! Yes we will! Yes we can!
Adios,
Larry
